I have taught at the Jung Center in Evanston, Illinois, in the continuing education department at the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago, at Southwestern College in Santa Fe, and conducted private workshops. These workshops and classes have focused on dreaming, astrology, and the creative mind.

The Value of Dreaming

Research shows that dreaming is something that every human does. However, many people pay little attention to the experience of dreaming. Both Freud and Jung were committed to using dreams as the centerpiece of their psychoanalytic practice because they understood that dreams are the most effective way to receive important information from the unconscious mind. Unfortunately, the great collaboration between Jung and Freud ended in a split, leaving the two schools of thought to go their own way. However, both men contributed interesting and effective insights and methodologies to utilize dreams in psychoananlysis. I am an expert in the use of dreams in psychotherapeutic work. I have also studied lucid dreaming and symbolism. This lecture will explore how anyone can begin to take their dream-life seriously in order to connect to the most creative and intelligent part of his or her own nature. Drawing on Freud, Jung, and the great Tibetan Master, Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche, the true value of dreaming will be discussed.

Problems of Love

This course explores why maintaining loving relationships is possibly the most complex challenge of an individual's life. Though falling in love can be enlivening and exciting, encountering Eros can also activate our deepest psychological complexes. We will read Plato's Symposium, articles by Freud and Jung, Carson McCullers's Ballad of the Sad Cafe and view Fellini's early masterpiece La Strada while we inquire into the most compelling questions about the problems of love and desire in our lives.

Astrology for the Creative Mind

In this workshop we will explore the art of astrology as a means of expanding and enlightening the creative mind. Astrology is a meditation on nature. The subjects embodied by astrology are vast, including, but not limited to, nature and the four sacred seasons, mythology, sacred geometry, and psychology. We will explore the philosophy of astrology and it's connection to karma and reincarnation. We will meditate on the signs of the zodiac, the planets, the elements and the qualities. We will also explore the archetypal and symbolic nature of astrology as a language of the collective unconscious.

Astrology 1 — Beginning to Read the Horoscope

This workshop seeks to understand astrology as a system of the collective unconscious. Building on the philosophical ideas of Carl Jung, we will explore the natal horoscope as a road map to individual consciousness. The participants can bring their personal horoscopes and we will begin the process of learning to understand how the planets, signs of the zodiac, planetary aspects and house placements and other aspects of the natal chart can be read as a road map of the individual personality. Participants can use online websites to calculate and print their horoscopes to bring to class.

Astrology for Therapists

Interest in astrology is booming. The information age has resulted in profound and rapid change in day-to-day living. Furthermore, people are increasingly turning to alternative philosophies and methods of healing to understand today’s complex world. Astrology is one of the most popular modalities people are exploring.

In this course, you will learn the basics of astrology and upon completion, you will have a working vocabulary and basic knowledge of this fascinating ancient art. Astrology encompasses a vast array of subjects including; mythology; sacred geometry; nature and the four sacred seasons and astronomy. Studying its archetypal system enhances one’s ability to think symbolically which leads to a greater capacity to work with dreams. Harvard-educated astrologer, historian and author Rick Tarnas notes: “Not the least of the many unexpected rewards permitted by the study of astrology is the extraordinary aesthetic satisfaction it so constantly affords. With its seemingly unending disclosure of elegant archetypal patternings synchronously coinciding with corresponding planetary alignments, astrology would appear to have been designed by the cosmos, as it were, to bring forth a certain appreciative awe in witness of this inconceivably complex orchestration. And  contrary to the assumption of many unversed in the study, the more rigorous the intellectual care brought to the astrological investigation, the more profound the resulting intellectual pleasure.”

As part of this course, you can calculate your own horoscope online and study it as we begin the study of an increasingly popular method of exploring the Self.
